‘300′ Movie Review
Starring: Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, Michael Fassbender, Vincent Regan, and Dominic West.
Synopsis: In the Battle of Thermopylae of 480 BC an alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian army in the mountain pass of Thermopylae. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held back the enemy in one of the most famous last stands of history. Persian King Xerxes lead an Army of well over 100,000 (Persian king Xerxes before war has about 170,000 army) men to Greece and was confronted by 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians and other Slave soldiers.
Xerxes waited for 10 days for King Leonidas to surrender or withdraw left with no options he moved. The battle lasted for about 3 days and after which all 300 Spartans were killed. The Spartan defeat was not the one expected as a local shepherd named Ephialtes defected to the Persians and informed Xerxes of a separate path through Thermopylae, which the Persians could use to outflank the Greeks.
Review: This movie is a very graphic and dramatic movie. While it portrays the Spartans as the heroes they were, the enemies were a little overdramatized. I don’t think that the Persians really had huge, ugly, un-human like monsters with crab claws and rotting faces.
I liked the movie except I beleive there was just a little too much blood during the battle scenes. After all everyone loved the battle scenes in Lord of the Rings and there wasn’t half that much blood and gore.
If you have a weak stomach then you might want to hold back on this one. I found myself turning away at a lot of places because it was so gruesome. But, besides this point it was portrayed well and some of the drama helped to get the story of the Spartans across.
