‘Freedom Writers’ Review
Starring: Hilary Swank, Patrick Dempsey, Imelda Staunton, Scott Glenn, and April Lee Hernandez.
Synopsis: Assigned the difficult task of teaching freshman English at a gang-infested Long Beach, CA high school, a 23-year-old teacher resorts to unconventional means of breaking through to her gang hardened students. Her students had been written off as hopeless, and her chances of succeeding were laughed at, but Erin Gruwell wasn’t about to go down without a fight.
Despite the initially hostile reaction she receives in the classroom, Gruwell uses the writings of Anne Frank and Zlata’s Diary: A Child’s Life in Sarajevo to teach her students compassion and tolerance. Later, when the time comes to tell their own tales in a project specially designed to explore the daily violence that the majority of students have grown numb to, the barriers that had once stood so strong gradually begin to crumble.
Review: This movie, based on a true story, is an inspiring movie with an incredible cast. Hilary Swank, who is known for being able to adapt to any role given her, plays the part of the teacher wonderfully. She is delightfully chipper at some moments, but when the time comes for her to get down and serious, well let’s just say I wouldn’t want to cross her.
Some say that this movie is just like every other movie that deals with inner-city and troubled teens. Sure, there are alot of these movies out there. Yes, sometimes it can get overwhelming, but think of the good it does to share these true life stories. When another one of these movies is made, it should give you hope to know that there are some people in the world who truly cares for those who need help. Who want to make a difference in someone’s lives and leave a mark behind in this world.
I would say to definitely watch this movie. You will not be dissapointed, but rather inspired. And in the end, who knows, maybe you’ll be filled with the desire to help someone as well.
